The Purpose of LySEF

Enhance and promote Longyearbyen as a base for research and education
through coordination and collaborative efforts.

Background for the establishment of LySEF

The proposal of a establishing a forum for the different scientific institutions and activities in Longyearbyen, similar to the functions of NySMAC (The Ny-Ålesund Science Managers Committee) in Ny-Ålesund, has been an existing idea in the scientific community for a long time.

In the autumn of 2007, several institutions located in the Svalbard Science Centre in Longyearbyen started working together on the establishment of such a forum, which later was to become LySEF. The idea was first discussed during a meeting held at UNIS on October 2nd, 2007. Another meeting was held on November 30th, 2007 in order to discuss how this forum should work and establish proposals for the main aims of the forum. Participants from several interested institutions and organisations, also from outside the Svalbard Science Centre, joined the planning group at this point.

In the long run, the results from LySEF should convince the participating institutions, governmental bodies and funding agencies that it is worth while to commit further to this effort.

LySEF held its first official meeting on May 13th 2008.
